Royal Mail Activities Announced For European Health and Safety Week

EU Employers working with Trade Unions and Safety Representatives will play an invaluable role through actively communicating the importance of safe maintenance in the workplace and through campaigning events. EU Health and Safety Week 2010 will take place between 25-29 October. The week aims to highlight many of the risks involved in both routine maintenance and also reactive maintenance. Not only can maintenance work expose workers to a wide range of hazards such as asbestos and falls from height, but if an employer skips on maintenance work this can, in itself create new hazards.

Dave Joyce, National Health, Safety & Environment Officer announced in LTB840/10 that the Royal Mail, and Romec Ltd are holding a series of events during the week:

Dave writes: "I am extremely pleased to announce that following discussions this year with the Royal Mail Group Head of Safety, Royal Mail Letters Director Safety, Royal Mail Logistics Director Safety, Parcelforce Head of Safety, Post Office Ltd Head of Safety and the Romec Ltd Head of Safety, all have agreed to support the week, with a number of events organised during the week as well as agreement being reached to support a National Inspection Day and to support local discussions to agree activities on the Monday and throughout the week with Royal Mail, Romec and the CWU fully involved."

He gives detail of the Royal Mail commitment:

"TUC National H&S Inspection day is normally on the Wednesday of EU H&S Week. However, it has been agreed that National H&S Inspection Day will take place on Tuesday in Royal Mail workplaces as the Allan St John Holt Memorial Lecture takes place on the Wednesday. Health and Safety Inspections will involve CWU Area Safety Reps and Royal Mail, Logistics, Parcelforce, POL and Romec Managers as appropriate. The agreed week of activities are as follows:-

Monday 25 Oct       Local Joint H&S Activities in the Regions to be organised and agreed by Safety Managers and Safety Reps to commence Monday and continue throughout the week. (meetings to discuss this should be organised ASAP)

Tuesday 26 Oct      National Workplace H&S Inspection Day (CWU H&S Reps to agree inspection sites with Royal Mail, Parcelforce, POL and Romec Managers as appropriate. Meetings to discuss this should be organised ASAP)

Wednesday 27 Oct  Allan St John Holt Memorial Lecture 1.30pm - 4.30pm - Mail Management Centre at Coton House, near Rugby. (Those CWU ASRs wishing to attend should apply ASAP - See LTB No 734/10)

Thursday 28 Oct     RMG Celebrating H&S Event - Mail’s Management Centre at Coton House, near Rugby. (Those CWU ASRs wishing to attend should apply ASAP - See LTB No 838/10 )

Friday 29 Oct         RMG/Romec Ltd Safe Maintenance Event - RM Phoenix Place London. (Those CWU ASRs wishing to attend should apply ASAP - See LTB No 839/10 )
